International Adoption Options
International adoption, or intercountry or overseas adoption, is where an individual or a couple becomes the permanent parents of a child born in another country.1 Prospective parents must meet the legal requirements for adoption from both their country and the country in which the child is born.
In the United States, typically the first step in the international adoption process is to find out if you can adopt.1 No one who is convicted, and in some cases accused, of a child abuse/neglect crime can adopt.1 No country allows homosexuals to adopt, but some people in a homosexual relationship can use a single parent international adoption. Sometimes the adoption agencies decide if you can adopt, but most of the time the criteria is set the exact same as the government criteria.1 Also, couples who are not married may not be able to adopt.1You have to remember that the laws and morals of other countries are not the same as the United States; however, you can claim to be a single to adopt.1 The adoption process can take anywhere from 7-18 months, depending on what country you are adopting from.
The cost of adopting internationally can run anywhere from $10,000 to $25,000.1 Some people take out personal loans for the fees, and most are middle class.1 The price may seem overwhelming, but the money is not all due at one time.1
The second step is to find and international adoption agency.1 Most of the time you will choose an international adoption agency that is not in the same state as you are in.1 In this case you will have to have a home study conducted by an agency or social worker that is in your state.1 There are called Home Study Agencies.1 You can find them in the yellow pages under 'adoption.'1 You want an experienced agency or social worker to do your home study.1They need to be licensed.1 You will probably want to interview them, because you are hiring them.1You need to be comfortable with them.1 The adoption agency will tell you if you can adopt, also.
You will need to know what kind of child you want.1 Do you want a boy or a girl1 Do you want a young child1 A baby1 A toddler1 A group of siblings1 Race is an issue, so address it.1 Do you want a child that looks like you1 This will help you find out what countries will work with you.
One of the largest international adoption agencies is the Christian World Adoption.1 This is a Christian international adoption agency that has placed thousands of children from Africa, Asia, Eastern Europe and Latin America since 1991.1 They offer adoption programs in Bulgaria, China, Ethiopia, Guatemala, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Russia and the Ukraine.1 They have free adoption information on the website, and a toll free call center if you decide that you are ready to call one of their adoption counselors.
Your adoption agency will take over everything from here, and help you get started.
